As the inaugural 2019 Turtle Ball season comes to a close, the Turtle Ball owners had a chance to vote on players who were nominated for End of the Year awards. The finalists were among the best players in the league as well as a few pleasant surprises for some owners this year. Here are the winners of the 2019 End of Year Awards;
AL MVP:
Receiving 21/25 votes, Cody Bellinger (OAK), is the 2019 AL MVP. Bellinger led the way for the Athletics this year compiling a lofty stat line of 47 home-runs, 115 RBIs, a .305 BA and a 1.035 OPS. Bellinger's impressive 2019 campaign paved the way for the Athletics to win the AL West and earn the number one overall seed in the AL playoffs. Finishing tied for 2nd place are Alex Bregman (TEX), Trevor Story (TB), Gerrit Cole (BAL), Paul Goldschmidt (DET), each receiving 1 vote.
NL MVP
Receiving 9/25 votes, Mike Trout (LAD) is the 2019 NL MVP. Although Trout's 2019 campaign was cut short due to injury, Trout earned NL MVP by posting a monster stat line for the Dodgers of 45 home-runs, 104 RBIs, a .291 BA and a 1.083 OPS. Rafael Devers (CHC) finished second in the voting with 6 votes, followed by Pete Alonso (NYM) and Ronald Acuna Jr. (SF) tied for 3rd place with 5 votes each.
AL CY Young
Receiving 20/25 votes, Gerrit Cole (BAL) is the 2019 AL Cy Young. The Baltimore Orioles joined the postseason dance in large part due to their ace Gerrit Cole's herculean 2019 campaign. On the mound in 2019, Cole produced a stellar stat line of a 2.50 ERA, 326 strikeouts and 0.89 WHIP. Justin Verlander(DET) finished second in the voting with 3 votes, followed by Jacob DeGrom(KC) in 3rd place with 2 votes.
NL Cy Young
Receiving 12/25 votes, Stephen Strasburg (CHC) is the 2019 NL Cy Young. Strasburg's wire to wire heroics in 2019 helped the Cubs earn the number one overall seed in the NL Playoffs and win the NL Central. Strasburg's eye popping stat line included a 3.32 ERA, 251 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP. Jack Flaherty(ATL) finished second in the voting with 9 votes, followed by Zack Greinke(SF) in 3rd place with 4 votes.
AL ROY
Receiving 18/24 votes, Yordan Alvarez(CLE) is the 2019 AL ROY. Similar to a tsunami, Alvarez came out of nowhere to carry the Indians to the 2019 postseason. Alvarez's heavy lifting produced a gaudy stat line of 27 home-runs, 78 RBIs, a .313 BA and a 1.067 WHIP all as a rookie. While his opponents in this category were deserving of votes, owners recognized that without Alvarez the Indians would've been on the outside looking in for the 2019 postseason. Chris Paddack(OAK) and Eloy Jiminez(DET) finished tied for second in the voting with 3 votes each.
NL ROY
Receiving all 25 votes, Pete Alonso(NYM) unanimously wins the 2019 NL ROY. Although he played for the Amazin's in 2019, it is not an amazing declaration that Pete Alonso secured the NL ROY unanimously. Alonso started the season hot and never looked back as he boosted the Mets to second overall seed in the NL playoffs and to win the NL East. During the 2019 campaign, Alonso forged a meaty stat line which included 53 home-runs, 120 RBIs, a .260 BA and a .941 OPS.
AL Breakout Player of the Year
Each receiving 11 votes, Christian Walker (LAA) and Hunter Dozier (CLE) are co-winners of the 2019 AL Breakout Player of the Year Award. A shared award is rare but Walker and Dozier, both of whom were not household names across the league, stuffed the stat sheet all season long and it should be no surprise now that they share the award. Max Fried (OAK) finished second in the voting with 2 votes, followed by Scott Kingery (NYY) receiving 1 vote.
NL Breakout Player of the Year
Receiving 17/25 votes, Jorge Soler (SD) is the 2019 NL Breakout Player of the Year. A career year for Soler in 2019 produced much needed help for the Padres as Soler's break-out campaign pushed the Padres into the postseason and atop the NL West. Soler dropped a fantastic stat line across the 2019 season which included 48 home-runs, 117 RBIs, a .265 BA and a .922 OPS. Shane Bieber(CHC) and Tim Anderson(SF) finished tied for second in the voting with 3 votes each, followed by Zack Gallen(PIT) with 2 votes.
AL Comeback Player of the Year
Receiving 18/25 votes, Sonny Gray(SEA) is the 2019 AL Comeback Player of the Year. 2019's results for Sonny Gray was anything but grey as he produced a remarkable bounce back season for the Mariners which provided one of their only bright spots for their organization. Gray bounced back in a huge way by posting a stat line of a 2.87 ERA, 205 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP. Hyun-Jin Ryu(MIN) and Yu Darvish(DET) finished tied for second in the voting with 3 votes each, followed by Julio Urias(CHW) with 1 vote.
NL Comeback Player of the Year
Receiving 11/24 votes, Jonathan Villar (MIA) is the 2019 NL Comeback Player of the Year. Despite a four year absence from the diamond, Villar showed little signs of rust in 2019 as his resurgent preformance fueled the Marlins to the 2019 postseason. Villar's return created a prolific stat line which included 24 home-runs, 73 RBIs, a .274 BA and a .792 WHIP. Miguel Sano(MIL) finished second in the voting with 10 votes, followed by Christian Vazquez(SD) receiving 2 votes.
